Anatomy of the Human Larynx and Vocal Cords (Structural Overview)

This diagram provides essential anatomical context for understanding how airflow from the lungs is shaped into sound. It helps singers, speakers, and voice students visualise the structures responsible for phonation, articulation, and fine control of the voice during breathing and vocal production.

Together with the diaphragm and respiratory system, the larynx forms the core mechanism that transforms breath into controlled sound.

Inside every headphone or loudspeaker, electrical energy is turned into motion. When an electric current flows through a voice coil, it creates a magnetic field that pushes and pulls a thin diaphragm. This motion moves the surrounding air — forming pressure waves we perceive as sound. The animation below shows this simple yet beautiful process: energy becoming vibration, vibration becoming tone.

This visual demonstrates the principle of wave interference — a foundational concept in acoustics. The same phenomenon explains noise cancellation, room reflections, microphone phase interaction, and why certain recording environments amplify or cancel parts of the voice. Red shows the original sound wave. Blue shows an inverted sound wave, created to oppose the original signal. The green or yellow line shows the combined result, where the two waves interact and cancel each other out, reducing the overall sound through destructive interference.

These principles are directly applied in microphones, where acoustic sound waves are converted into electrical signals. The two most common microphone types—condenser and dynamic—use different physical mechanisms to achieve this transformation.

It’s not so difficult as you think. My pupils often ask me to help them them as a vocal coach just to improve their articulation and diction skills. Well you can make that change yourself. Please see below attached tongue twisters. They will help you immensely during your singing lessons. Try to read slowly but give attention to every syllable, consonant and vowel. Experiment with loud and quiet sound. Imagine that the audience is sitting far away from you and project the sound, make it clear.

Try to explore these tongue twisters. By doing so you do the same training as professional actors, public speakers around the world and boost immensely your articulation and diction. Additionally, I would suggest, please give more attention to the way you attack consonants, try to perceive them differently, make them sharper, more clear and perhaps, louder. Also, aim to train in front of the mirror. Moreover, Imagine that you are in a bigger space surrounded by audience. I often recommend these exercises to my pupils in my works as a singing teacher and a vocal coach.
